Advocacy

Community Advocacy

Our team seeks to inspire, equip and empower Neighbours experiencing poverty by challenging chronic income and food insecurity. We do this through stronger community support networks and by promoting individual and systemic action.

Through the power of good food, Community and improved healthy and affordable food access points, our team works to share information, recommend wrap-around services, referrals and support to all Neighbours.

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

We’re not offering a sponsorship program this year, but your commitment to supporting Neighbours through these especially difficult times is still very much needed!

The advocacy team has put together a list of community resources for Neighbours.

COMMUNITY REPORT

FOOD IS A FUNDIMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT

This year Parkdale Food Centre is excited to announce that the City of Ottawa has joined us in officially declaring October 5th as Right to Food Day!

To kick off things off in 2022, we hosted a press conference at the Hintonburg Community Centre attended by staff and Neighbours. We shared the stats from the Knowing Our Neighbours survey and highlighted the need for a focus on remedying the root causes of food insecurity.

The advocacy team also organized an evening Right 2 Food Day 2022 full of music, good food, speeches and information tables on ways to get involved and push leadership to make change.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

The advocacy team works with Neighbours to inform programming at Parkdale Food Centre. See examples of current offerings below.

A HUMAN RIGHT TO FOOD

The stark data that was uncovered in the ‘Knowing Our Neighbours’ Survey inspired Meredith Kerr, Manager Communications & Donor Relations to breathe life into these numbers through Neighbour-led storytelling and film. Watch the film by the talented Hersi Osman below.
