 Job Opening: Community Kitchen Coordinator

Working closely with the Kitchen Manager, the Community Kitchen Coordinator’s core responsibilities are to coordinate the preparation of nutritious and delicious meals for our neighbours and after-school program, in addition to supporting other kitchen activities and opportunities for learning. The coordinator will help ensure a positive and healthy environment while balancing the needs of neighbours and volunteers coming from a diversity of backgrounds and with various levels of experience.  The position will also work with partner organizations and businesses, including area farmers, Mealshare, local restaurants, etc. to build partnerships.  

We are looking for a professional  who loves cooking and working in a kitchen! This person should have the ability to cultivate an inclusive and creative kitchen environment and a passion for creating social change through food. 

This position requires experience working in a challenging environment, handling high volume of participants with multiple demands, de-escalating conflict, managing and intervening during crisis. The Coordinator will ensure that service delivery is guided by our Good Food Policy and it reflects the mission, vision and values of our organization.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Plan menus and lead the preparation of high-volume meals with the help of volunteers
  • Source, order, and manage inventory of food for community meals 
  • Provide welcoming, safe and dignified services to neighbours accessing our programming.
  • Engage with participants with a trauma-informed approach
  • Work with team managing and intervening when crises arise and support de-escalating behavior in a way that is compassionate and firm
  • Develop and deliver on-boarding and training materials which support the success and effectiveness of volunteers and volunteer activities.
  • In collaboration with the Food Bank Manager, supervise and support volunteers in the kitchen
  • Identify participants and volunteers with knowledge and skills to share and support them to build their capacity to take on leadership roles
  • Interview, screen and supervise assigned placement students and neighbours performing community service hours
  • Establish and support goals and objectives for placement students 
  • Coordinate and facilitate group team-building cooking activities with outside groups through our Fill the Freezer program 
  • Work with Kitchen Manager to develop and implement evaluation, reporting, and development activities such as data collection, grant writing and annual reporting  
  • Contribute to annual planning initiatives at Parkdale Food Centre
  • Contribute to communications through outlets such as social media and website
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new activities and projects.
  • Establish, maintain and leverage community partnerships that support our kitchen programming and offer opportunities to provide support in the sector
  • Assist with communications, events (including fundraising events) and other organization-wide activities
  • Liaise with users of Parkdale Food Centre kitchen space to ensure standards and best practices

Qualifications

  • Experience with large-scale meal preparation and menu planning
  • Ability to respond quickly with good judgment in challenging, unusual and/or emergency situations
  • Ability to work in a fast paced demanding environment.
  • Commitment to food security, social justice
  • Sensitivity to and experience working with diverse individuals, including those who are homeless, dealing with addiction, poverty and mental illness.
  • Experience organizing volunteers and acting in a leadership role
  • Safe food handling certificate
  • College diploma in culinary arts an asset
  • Experience working with children an asset
  • Experience with program planning and evaluation an asset
  • Certification in crisis intervention, safe food handling and/or first aid is an asset.

Working conditions

This position requires regular evening work on Tuesdays until 8:00pm and occasional work on other weeknights and weekends to support fundraising activities for the Centre and to assist organizations who use the PFC facilities to host special events.  

This position requires working with people who are homeless, dealing with addiction, poverty and mental illness.

Physical requirements

This position is physically demanding. The coordinator is required to stand for extended periods of time, lift heavy objects on a regular basis, and interact with many people with few breaks.

Salary: $40,000.00 to $45,000.00 /year prorated.
