Parkdale Food Centre is one four organizations across Ontario teaming up with Second Harvest in a pilot expansion of foodrescue.ca in their local communities. Here in Ottawa, PFC is supporting agencies and businesses in adopting this free and easy-to-use online platform for food recovery and donation. Through foodrescue.ca, food donors post what they are offering, food recipients claim what they need and a pick up is coordinated.

Unfortunately, 58% of food produced in Canada is lost or wasted annually. However, almost one third of this wasted food could be rescued and redistributed. Second Harvest saw an opportunity here and developed foodrescue.ca as a direct response to the challenge of food waste.

“Foodrescue.ca provides us with so much variety of food that we can use. It’s also so easy to use and allows us to connect with donors we never thought of connecting [with]. ”

— Laura Kiss, Coordinator at Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, Elisa House
